  • Radio Prague - Čížov - the last fragment of the Iron Curtain
dogs would patrol such fences in pairs one walking inside the gap between fences while the other would walk on the public side These were usually young men indoctrinated through mandatory military service to be a noble pohraničík The official line was that they were protecting the state against dangerous external enemies In reality they were guarding a giant Soviet occupied prison and serving a regime desperately trying to prevent its own people from escaping Photo Dominik Jůn Only a short section here perhaps 20 metres long features a somewhat more accurate double fence Apparently the fortifications utilised in such fences were updated several times between the 1950 80s After the 1960s 10 000 volt electrification was out for humane reasons Instead electronic trip wires were used to detect untoward movement Increasing paranoia by the authorities often saw such border zones thickened and moved inward away from the border So is even the short section of double fence at Čížov a truly accurate representation Turns out not There was quite probably also a third layer of fence in this 20 metre thick obstacle course Not to mention additional electrified wires to prevent animals straying into the fence And likely even a fourth lesser fence on the other side of the asphalt path used by border guards Also present would have been rows of electrical poles for all the wires needed to keep the entire system running Add to that all the signs warning people to keep away WW II bunker in Podyjí photo Dominik Jůn It s certainly fascinating to visit Čížov and see at least a fragment of this otherwise entirely lost piece of history But one can t help but feel a little disappointed that a more expansive and detailed remnant or reproduction of the Iron Curtain is not to be found anywhere in the Czech Republic There are certainly places that would benefit from such a tourist attraction Western Bohemia for one But in other places too Indeed not long ago I spoke to a lady who helps run the tiny local museum in the southern Bohemian town of České Velenice which directly neighbours the Austrian town of Gmünd I asked her whether people here regretted not having preserved some of the truly intricate Iron Curtain defences which existed here as a tourist draw The town could certainly use that she nodded enthusiastically before telling me about ongoing fundraising for another project here to revive an early 20th century trolleybus route Maybe an EU grant could be sought to rebuild an accurate section of the fence I then suggested Maybe one day somewhere Tools Send by email Subscribe to RSS Print Social bookmarking Tweet Česky Deutsch English Español Français Pусский Featured 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 Most Popular Symbol of help for refugees attacked in Prague 08 02 2016 15 35 Ian Willoughby On Saturday evening hours after anti Islamic demonstrations in Prague around 20 masked men attacked a social centre in the city that

  • Radio Prague - Independent game design studio develops ‘Ghost Theory’
make use of in the game Usually in a Hollywood film when the protagonists learn they are living in a site which is possessed the main obstacle is simply to get out Here you have property owners some of which are famous haunts if they believe in the paranormal what are they still doing there Yeah well some probably don t believe and have it more as a business Some of the places offer visitors a chance to spend the night in a haunted home to creep themselves out or want to try and see the spirit or have a paranormal spirit Others though might be owners who don t actually live at the property Ghost Theory photo archive of Dreadlocks It must be a great talking point to own a property which is the site of a famous haunt So some don t believe others might Now one of the biggest aspects of this game is the immersion Immersion more and more is seen a key goal of games like this and you want to take it further that it will be possible to play the game with a VR headset I imagine that virtual reality is one of the big parts of this project That was the goal when we opted for this project we wanted to make a game designed primarily for virtual reality the first commercial VR headsets are going to be released this year The technology is really incredible and you are fully immersed in the game For that reason horror was kind of an obvious genre to choose because everything becomes 10 times scarier Do you have to anticipate for different thresholds of what is scary In Ghost Theory you play a paranormal investigator who visits multiple haunted places We do That is one of the things which was commented on a lot in advance by people who haven t tried the game of course who were worried if it was too scary it wouldn t be for them So it will be scary but the story won t be built on giving users a heart attack every other moment with jump scares It won t be about things jumping at you You will be scared but it will be more about building up the atmosphere you will hear sounds and not know where they are coming from you will feel uneasy at points but it is about the mood and immersion So it s more about a growing sense of dread Exactly One of the things I got a kick out of was the tools you use as a paranormal investigator I know you have a camera We wanted to find a kind of middle ground compared to other video games You will have tools but as a character you will still be vulnerable The items you can use are a camera on which you hope to capture evidence of an apparition You have equipment you can record ambient sound with an EVP

  • Radio Prague - Extremism expert: we no longer have a clear line between what is extremist and what is normal
President Miloš Zeman he tours the regions frequently visiting even the smallest villages to talk to the locals and that is not something you see with government officials What has the role of the media been in this crisis Photo CTK Similar as politicians We see good media coverage and on the other hand there is a growing tendency to carry wrong information about migrants so at least part of the media scene is now partially responsible for the growing hate against migrants and we can see the growing popularity of media that are anti migrant oriented What can this radicalization lead to I am not an optimist in this sense I think that this radicalization including violent incidents and a huge division in society is now a reality and I do not see the possibility for positive development in the future We now have the electoral campaign ahead of the regional elections and that is a reason for possible growing radicalization But extremist parties have never been very successful in this country they ve never had a great deal of support That is true and it is a positive element in this development on the other hand we can see this partial radicalization of specific sections within the established parties The police were criticized for how they handled the demonstrations and the street violence would you agree with that That is an operative or tactical question Yes the clashes in Prague were maybe underestimated by the police however I think that in general the police is able to counter the most visible incidents of extremism However we have had a relatively quiet situation up till now If the violence should escalate then the police will need a new approach towards this phenomenon We no longer have a clear line between what is considered extremist and what is considered normal Are the same processes taking place in other European states as well do you see a radicalization across Europe because of the migrant crisis Yes I think that we can see a radicalization and we can see also a tendency towards the trans nationalization of this ant migrant anti Islamic policy Evidence of that are the February demonstrations which were organized in several European countries What is the danger for Europe in this In the division of society and tendency towards violence The whole of Europe is now divided and the next danger a different danger is the growing radicalization of Islamic communities It is impossible to underestimate this tendency What is the solution to this radicalization in the Czech Republic and elsewhere I think that in the short term perspective there is no quick solution but in the long term perspective more communication in Europe and a better solution to the migrant crisis because now we have a very hot situation and in the short term perspective I am not an optimist Finally do the Czech authorities do a good job in tackling extremism in general Photo CTK If
